Cyanuric acid is close to 100 percent CYA, so the math is the same as any dose by weight: pounds equals the ppm increase times your gallons times 8.34, divided by one million. For a traditional chlorine pool, aim for 30 to 50 ppm CYA. For a saltwater pool with a salt chlorine generator, run higher, around 60 to 80 ppm, because stabilizer protects the chlorine your cell makes from burning off in the sun. Whatever your number, remember that your target free chlorine rises with your CYA, since chlorine works through the FC/CYA ratio.

Stabilizer is slow to dissolve, so add it in a sock in the skimmer basket or pump return, keep the pump running, and squeeze the sock to help it dissolve over a few days. Do not vacuum or backwash for a day or two while it works in. CYA only leaves the water by dilution, so the only way to lower a high reading is to drain part of the pool and refill. Add about three quarters of the calculated amount first, retest after a week, then top up. These are estimates, so test your own water.

Chemical safety. Never mix pool chemicals, including two chlorine products or chlorine and acid. Always add the chemical to the water, never water to the chemical. Run the pump while dosing so it circulates, dose a little under the calculated amount, then wait and retest before adding any more. Store chemicals separately, away from kids and pets.
